Xilinx Serial Digital Video Board for HD-SDI, SDI and DVB-ASI

The integration of multi- gigabit serial I/O into the Virtex-II Pro family of FPGAs from Xilinx has enabled the support of many more networking standards than previously possible. This now includes HD-SDI (SMPTE292M), SDI (SMPTE259M) and DVB-ASI. These popular standards offer high-bandwidth transmission between various video applications in the headend, edit suite or studio, and can take a significant portion of the bill of materials, particularly when there's a need for multiple channels. However, integrating the network protocols into a Xilinx FPGA means that the overall system cost can be considerably reduced. Basing your system on Xilinx FPGAs gives you the flexibility to meet your exact requirements, supporting standard interfaces but still enabling you to differentiate from your competition.

The Xilinx SDV Board demonstrates that it is now viable to integrate HD-SDI, SDI and DVB-ASI encoders and decoders into an FPGA, thus enabling the use of lower cost cable drivers and equalizers and lowering the total bill of materials required for these video channels. Typical ASSP solutions for implementing a single serial digital video channel can cost almost $200 but it is now possible to reduce this by over 80% using a Xilinx FPGA-based solution. Using an FPGA rather than just ASSPs also gives you the added flexibility of being able to modify the device to support other video functions in the extra space - effectively giving you this added functionality at no extra cost.
